The Dogon people of Mali and African art

The Creative Collection Chapter X is a blend of different sources of inspiration and a variety of experiences. One of these is a trip to Mali on the trail of the Dogon people, and the villages perched on the Bandiagara escarpment, their customs and their spirituality. A project based on the pursuit of archaic, primordial aesthetic codes and new ways of experiencing art.

The Dogon is an animist people, and their artistic production is therefore closely linked to the daily existence and cult of their ancestors, depicted in the form of solemn statues, or in the reliefs carved on the so-called “barn doors”.
Some of the most interesting objects are their masks, highly imaginative and monumental works of art inspired by the phases of the cosmogony and worn by dancers during the religious ceremonies.

The use of natural elements, including wood and earth, creates a strong sense of texture, and bold colours such as red, yellow, black and white breathe life into a vibrant universe brimming with emotions. An unknown, fascinating reality, surrounded by a magnetic force that draws you in, with the same intensity as its customs.

These references have inspired Dogon, Saari, Tratto, Sienna and Grandfield, to name but a few. Their design combines the timeless elegance and refinement of the Glamora wall coverings with graphics reminiscent of the sensation of raw earth and the dynamism of an ancestral dance.
