A residential project with a very high level of tailoring that celebrates the owners’ passion for reading and offers innovative interior design solutions, creating a welcoming and functional space.
Thanks to the vision and craftsmanship of Icona Architetti Associati, a Milanese flat has been transformed into an elegant and functional ‘nest lined with volumes’: a tribute to the patrons' love of reading, a couple with a collection of thousands of paper tomes.
The project is not only a custodian of numerous texts, but also an ode to the flexibility and affordance of the book itself, transposed into the interior architecture.
The entrance to the living room is through a bridge bookcase, which creates a visual filter between the rooms, guiding the guest towards the heart of the house.
Here, Glamora’s Cast wallcovering, created on GlamTrace material, gives the walls a distinctive character, with textures that recall the tactility and depth of handmade paper, adding a touch of elegance and sophistication that emphasises the cosy and intimate atmosphere of this refuge of stories.
In the living room, the eye is caught by the large full-wall bookcase, which finishes the space behind the marble sofa and dining table.
This element is not only functional, but also transformative: like a music box, it opens and closes thanks to a system of hinges, inspired by the gesture of turning a page.
The full-height bookcase represents the magic of this flat. Its vertical lines bend 180 degrees, creating a spatial fluidity that connects the living room to the study, allowing a continuous transformation of the space according to need. This mechanism, the result of in-depth and customised research, allows fluid movements, making the studio an isolated room or one with the living room, depending on requirements.
I.A.A.’s project is a successful example of how architecture can transform a living space into a place of wonder, inaugurating new perspectives for a home made up of people and books, which becomes a veritable container of stories and worlds.
